KANYE WEST...

...Is A Robot. So the story goes that whenever Kanye works with Complex Magazine (pretty often, actually) he insists on having a cover (Isn't that just like him?) and usually one of his own imagination. This time is no different.

For the April/May issue of Complex, Mr. West has decided to depict himself as a robot. You know, because he's all futuristic and shit and tends to go off the rails like a Cylon demanding equal pay. So Marc Ecko and company (literally) gave the man what he wanted. There's also an article on the future of Kanye West, the man, the brand. And since its the 7th Anniversary issue, Complex will be dealing with their own bright future as they move into year 8. Most 7 year-olds aren't saying anything I want to hear. But Complex is not most 7 year-olds.

In stores...soonish?

DMZ VOLUME 7

I just finished Volume 6 of Brian Wood's DMZ. And like any good junkie, I'm already looking for my next fix. Brian Wood owns me. He's even made me like vikings with his Northlanders Series (Sorry, Dandelion).

Volume 7 of DMZ, titled War Powers, won't be released until September 8, 2009. It looks like I'll have some time to do some reading (I need to catch up on Northlanders) or better yet, some writing.

*Frustrated Sigh* September.
ITS COMING!

Where the Wild Things Are is being made into a movie. When it comes to the upcoming live-action adaption of the best book of my childhood (tied with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day) I'm overcome with a mixture of nostalgia and crippling terror over how easily "they" (whomever "they" consists of) could fuck this up. I have fond memories of this book, Flight of the Navigator, and Nick Jr.

Nick Jr. has been overshadowed by Noggin (I won't even START in on that one).

And any Flight of the Navigator remake would be a hate crime.

All my hopes (not very much, being that I'm a generational cynic) lie with the quality of this movie.

God I wish I had a purple crayon right now. (Get the reference?)

POPGUN

I first found out about the Popgun compilations when a friend during a daytrip to Barnes & Noble (yeah, I take those). A friend of mine found the last copy in the store, which I almost stabbed him over. To this day, I haven't read the first two (the third is being released March 29, 2009), but I've had the misfortune of getting tastes of volume 1 on the internet. I don't WANT to torrent it, that's stealing. But I'm slightly amoral, so...no I can't do that.

Anyway, Popgun is a series of American indie (technically) comic compilations featuring various authors and artists in the comics industry.

It seems worth reading. I think I will.
APPLE

Apple has nothing to do with Orange. The titled-by-fruit theme is just coincidental. With that in mind, Apple (and its sequel) is a Korean compilation of short manga (or the Korean equiv) stories by various artists/writers. I'm a fan of compilations like this because they showcase a lot talent that wouldn't be seen otherwise. And when dealing with regional talent, a compilation that will travel the world is a better medium.

Cool stuff. Check it out.
ORANGE

I picked up a copy of this graphic novel, Orange, a few weeks ago and forgot to post about it. This is me making amends. Orange, by "international manga superstar" Benjamin, is the story of a girl who goes up onto a roof to kill herself for various reasons and ends up meeting a guy. That's all I'm going to say. You should just read it and soak in the beautiful artwork and story.

FREE NICK

Today I came across this blog, Freenick.net, by and about a man named Nick who find himself recovering from a crystal meth addiction. Hard times, high crimes.

I could point out that I first clicked the link because I connected the words "free nick" with the bag in the above image. But I won't.

REMOTE NEURAL MONITORING

I just saw this on a blog I started reading today. Apparently this sign is being posted around Palm Springs. It's...well, its crazy. And funny.

Here's the corresponding Google search

GRAFFITI JAPAN

I just ordered a copy of the Graffiti Japan photography book, by Remo Camerota. It's worth picking up if you like (no, love) Japan, photography, graffiti, candid and action shots, and bright colors. I came across it by accident while Flickring images of Japan. Good thing I did.

YE OLDE FACEBOOK

I changed my Facebook language to Pirate English last night. Here's a sample of the emails it sends me now.
SCIENTOLOGY PIRATES

The torrent site PirateBay seems to have jumped on the Scientology bandwagon. They're now offering a full range of links to materials related to the Church of Scientology, most of which are labeled as having been banned from somewhere.

Click here for your free e-meter (not really, no).

SUGARSHOCK

I never get tired of Joss Whedon. The man has a way with words. The man plays ping pong with the English language. And he wrote Sugarshock. And Fabio Moon illustrated it. There are only three issues, but I'd sell your soul for more.

Also, Sugarshock features the best Abraham Lincoln sidestory, ever, in the history of comics.

So you should read it.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE

A fanatical sect of Heath Ledger fans have set up a website and demanded that Ledger be the last Joker ever in film, in respect of his legacy and award-worthy performance. They've boarded themselves up in a newly-built fortress in the mountains of Wyoming (See what I did there?), and set up shrines to Heath, sacrificing all his former leading ladies (they killed Julia Styles twice), and started building nuclear weapons, which will launch if their demands are not met (not really).

But seriously, the sentiment is admirable and, yes, Heath's performanc in The Dark Night was creepy-good, but I honeslty don't see Hollywood adhering to this, even with the petitition. Oh yeah, there's a petition.

CROOKED LITTLE VEIN (AGAIN)

Warren Ellis released a limited edition of his cult favorite prose novel, Crooked Little Vein. As of now, the only sure way to get a copy is to pry it from someone's cold, dead fingers.

I'll go get my crowbar.

BLOG ENVY

While looking for information about Heroes Volume 4, I stumbled across this blog. This guy called JGoat (although wouldn't it be impressive if he were a goat) REAMED Heroes. He called them on every bit of their bullshit and made me laugh in the process. I felt like I was reading a detailed email from an old friend. So I read what he had to say about Lost. And because I trust my old friend's opinion so much, I think I'm going to have to catch up on 4 seasons.

Old friend, someone's earned a cup of coffee.

WARREN ELLIS HURT ME

In the new chapter of Warren Ellis' online comic, Freakangels, Warren takes us (via teleportation) to see the underside of the apocalypse. Until now, we've only been privy to discussion and mention of just how horrible the world outside of Whitechapel, London was. But in Episode 44, we not only see it, we are beaten over the hearts with it. Enlarge the above image to get a taste of how the other half lives. Panel 3 is about where I started stringing a noose.

Warren, you're a bastard. Are you SURE you're not my dad?

Everyone else, read Freakangels

NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST

Holy shit. I could be upset because now that this movie has been done, and done so well, I will never be able to write my own midnight music odyssey book. But I also just discovered what true love was. Loving a movie was much simpler in the days of VHS, with the VCR's huge tape slot. You can only imagine what it's like to have your dick smashed in a DVD player while you're trying to show your affection to a movie the only way you know how. Firefighters laugh at me. Paramedics laugh at me. Cops ignore my calls. But I just can't help it. I found my movie soulmate.

Check out (by which I mean BUY) Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist in both book and movie form. And buy the goddamn soundtrack.

HEXED

Hexed is the new comic from BOOM Studios, starring Luci Jennifer Inacio Das Neves (Lucifer for short), a world-class thief with a shadowy past who uses her skills in magic to perform heists of the both Ocean's and Robin Hood varieties.

So far, the story has all the mystery and flash and human drama that's needed to make a good occult comic. After reading issue 1, I have pretty high hopes for what this could be. I hope I'm right, because they're off to a good start.

NANCY DREW? NO WAY!

Turns out there are Nancy Drew graphic novels.
I find that so cool for some reason.
Just thought I'd share that.
That's all.
