JAPANESE SPIDERMAN EPISODE 3

Why even comment on this? Just watch it.

Thanks to Marvel for making this embeddable.

DMZ VOLUME 7

I just finished Volume 6 of Brian Wood's DMZ. And like any good junkie, I'm already looking for my next fix. Brian Wood owns me. He's even made me like vikings with his Northlanders Series (Sorry, Dandelion).

Volume 7 of DMZ, titled War Powers, won't be released until September 8, 2009. It looks like I'll have some time to do some reading (I need to catch up on Northlanders) or better yet, some writing.

*Frustrated Sigh* September.

POPGUN

I first found out about the Popgun compilations when a friend during a daytrip to Barnes & Noble (yeah, I take those). A friend of mine found the last copy in the store, which I almost stabbed him over. To this day, I haven't read the first two (the third is being released March 29, 2009), but I've had the misfortune of getting tastes of volume 1 on the internet. I don't WANT to torrent it, that's stealing. But I'm slightly amoral, so...no I can't do that.

Anyway, Popgun is a series of American indie (technically) comic compilations featuring various authors and artists in the comics industry.

It seems worth reading. I think I will.
APPLE

Apple has nothing to do with Orange. The titled-by-fruit theme is just coincidental. With that in mind, Apple (and its sequel) is a Korean compilation of short manga (or the Korean equiv) stories by various artists/writers. I'm a fan of compilations like this because they showcase a lot talent that wouldn't be seen otherwise. And when dealing with regional talent, a compilation that will travel the world is a better medium.

Cool stuff. Check it out.
ORANGE

I picked up a copy of this graphic novel, Orange, a few weeks ago and forgot to post about it. This is me making amends. Orange, by "international manga superstar" Benjamin, is the story of a girl who goes up onto a roof to kill herself for various reasons and ends up meeting a guy. That's all I'm going to say. You should just read it and soak in the beautiful artwork and story.

WALLIES CHALK BOARD APPLIQUE SET

Found these on Amazon. They turn your wall into chalk board for making notes, keeping a schedule, etc. It's a pretty good idea aside from the reason people started using dry erase instead of chalk: chalk is just fucking messy. That flaw aside, I have been looking for something like this. I think I'd be happy in my room, insanely scrawling notes and ideas for whatever I'm working on onto the chalky sections of my walls, scratching my face and wiping my brow, then forgetting to check a mirror before running out to get some food and wondering why everyone's looking at me like I'm crazy. I could imagine they sense my genius and it repels them, a subconscious act of self preservation.

No, but I could get a lot of work done this way. Plus, I was already planning on writing notes on my wall and painting over them once I didn't need them anymore. This is still messy, but less so. Maybe I'll pick some up.

You should, too. Yeah, you. (Aqui)

TATUAJES

I found these tattoos in the Facebook group Tattoos and Tattoo Art's gallery. If you're going to get a superhero tattoo, this is the only way to do it. I'm still looking and hoping for an artist this talented.

SUGARSHOCK

I never get tired of Joss Whedon. The man has a way with words. The man plays ping pong with the English language. And he wrote Sugarshock. And Fabio Moon illustrated it. There are only three issues, but I'd sell your soul for more.

Also, Sugarshock features the best Abraham Lincoln sidestory, ever, in the history of comics.

So you should read it.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE

A fanatical sect of Heath Ledger fans have set up a website and demanded that Ledger be the last Joker ever in film, in respect of his legacy and award-worthy performance. They've boarded themselves up in a newly-built fortress in the mountains of Wyoming (See what I did there?), and set up shrines to Heath, sacrificing all his former leading ladies (they killed Julia Styles twice), and started building nuclear weapons, which will launch if their demands are not met (not really).

But seriously, the sentiment is admirable and, yes, Heath's performanc in The Dark Night was creepy-good, but I honeslty don't see Hollywood adhering to this, even with the petitition. Oh yeah, there's a petition.

WARREN ELLIS HURT ME

In the new chapter of Warren Ellis' online comic, Freakangels, Warren takes us (via teleportation) to see the underside of the apocalypse. Until now, we've only been privy to discussion and mention of just how horrible the world outside of Whitechapel, London was. But in Episode 44, we not only see it, we are beaten over the hearts with it. Enlarge the above image to get a taste of how the other half lives. Panel 3 is about where I started stringing a noose.

Warren, you're a bastard. Are you SURE you're not my dad?

Everyone else, read Freakangels

HEXED

Hexed is the new comic from BOOM Studios, starring Luci Jennifer Inacio Das Neves (Lucifer for short), a world-class thief with a shadowy past who uses her skills in magic to perform heists of the both Ocean's and Robin Hood varieties.

So far, the story has all the mystery and flash and human drama that's needed to make a good occult comic. After reading issue 1, I have pretty high hopes for what this could be. I hope I'm right, because they're off to a good start.

NANCY DREW? NO WAY!

Turns out there are Nancy Drew graphic novels.
I find that so cool for some reason.
Just thought I'd share that.
That's all.
TANK GIRL (IN THE SPIRIT OF RETURNING TO COOL THINGS)

Tank Girl was one of those things I'd let pass me by during my childhood. I was, after all, quite a self-involved little fucker. I remember the movie starring Lori Petty, which played in the background of my mind and almost certainly contributed to the present state of my imagination.

I didn't know why, but when I fell in love with The Gorillaz, the animated band that paved the way for my band, DINOSAUR!, the art style and atmosphere created by their videos set off my nostalgia detector like a marathon of Johnny Quest on Boomerang. If I'd known then what I know now, I probably would have had a seizure.

It seems, and I apologize for being so goddamn late to the party, but both of these things seem to be products of the insanely brilliant mind of one Jamie Hewlett, British-born artist and comic creator. In a mad dash to restore my cool, I've been attacking Amazon for every possible Tank Girl graphic novel collection. I'm working on making amends, Jamie (I write as though he'll ever read this). I'm in the process of just sitting back and admiring his quality of work. Tank Girl is genius for it's character and setting design alone, but the quality of writing and the execution of the plot make this worth reading. READ IT.

Also check out Hewlett's work for The Gorillaz, especially the Journey To The West video for the Beijing Olympics.

But that's enough ego stroking for now. Hopefully my next update will be about me. I like me.

An old release, I know, but Lex Luthor: Man of Steel looks at Lex Luthor, Superman's greatest nemesis, and his own perspective and motivations for his perpetual war against Superman, whom he views as an invader and a serious threat to the survival/evolution/future of humanity. It gets into what a man will do when he feels like he's the lone hero against a villain that has captured the hearts of all the people he's trying to protect. Cool concept. I just recieved it in the mail (I was gonna cleverly make a joke aboiut owls, but didn't. Bully for me.) and am going to start readign it soon. I hope it's good, but I'm sure it is.

PUSH

A non-cape comicbook movie I'm really excited about. Push follows a group of characters that possess one of three psychic abilities: Moving (telekinesis), Watching (precognition), or Pushing (tele-empathy).

The movie stars Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Camilla Bell, and Djimon Honsou (mover, watcher, pusher, pusher, respectively) and it LOOKS. COOL. In theaters 2/6/09

POWERPUFF GIRLS DOUJINSHI

There's an ongoing webcomic out there that features the Powerpuff Girls, Dexter (of Lab fame) and Samurai Jack. This is the most awesome thing I've heard seen involving PPG since I first heard of Fusion Fall and Powerpuff Girls Z. Once again, the cartoons from my childhood climb out of their graves for some fun.
