THE R.TAM SESSIONS

To coincide with the release of the Serenity movie a few years ago, Joss Whedon and tribe released this video on several fire sharing networks and any other random corner of the internet they could. They dropped this puppy off on the doorstep of the digital tests, with a note and a basket that would go on to be used to hold muffins or something.

The above video chronicles the downward spiral of the mental state of River Tam, leading to the condition she was in at the start of the Serenity movie.

I'm sorry, but I didn't even see how I had a choice about whether to post this.

SCIENTOLOGY PIRATES

The torrent site PirateBay seems to have jumped on the Scientology bandwagon. They're now offering a full range of links to materials related to the Church of Scientology, most of which are labeled as having been banned from somewhere.

Click here for your free e-meter (not really, no).

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE

A fanatical sect of Heath Ledger fans have set up a website and demanded that Ledger be the last Joker ever in film, in respect of his legacy and award-worthy performance. They've boarded themselves up in a newly-built fortress in the mountains of Wyoming (See what I did there?), and set up shrines to Heath, sacrificing all his former leading ladies (they killed Julia Styles twice), and started building nuclear weapons, which will launch if their demands are not met (not really).

But seriously, the sentiment is admirable and, yes, Heath's performanc in The Dark Night was creepy-good, but I honeslty don't see Hollywood adhering to this, even with the petitition. Oh yeah, there's a petition.

FIRST WORDS (EVER) SPOKEN BY EFFY STONEM ON SKINS

"Sometimes I think I was born backwards... you know, come out of my mum the wrong way. I hear words go past me backwards. The people I should love, I hate, and the people I hate..."

And then she overdosed on high quality heroin. *sigh*

But those wouldn't be her last words. No, Effy brought us such gems as:

Effy: You really don't understand anything, do you Tone?
Tony: What?
Effy: As long as it's ringing. She knows you're there.

Effy: You're an idiot. You are fucking the wrong girl. It's Cassie you love. You only got mixed up with Michelle, cause let's face it, men are dicks. And there was no one else to screw. Which is totally fucken pathetic. Isn't it?
Sid: Has anyone ever told you Effy, this sneaking up on people and getting inside their heads. It's no cool okay?
Effy: I'm right though.

Pandora: Where we going? ...Ef?
Effy: Yes?
Pandora: Where we going, Ef?
Effy: To pick up.
Pandora: To pick up what? (To mother on phone) Hi mum. We're just going to pick up. (To Effy) She wants to know what we're picking up.
Effy: Drugs.
Pandora: (To mother on phone) Salad.

Madame Deluca: And what emotion have you chosen to depict?
Effy: Anger, Jealousy, Bitterness, Tiredness, Hope, Lust, Love.

Madame Deluca: A veritable feast. So where is it?
Effy: It’s everywhere.

Will you be as amazing in Series 3, Effy? Will you grow as a person and character in ways that I can't help but to feel for you through every step? Will you make me confront feelings of attachment to a television character that I've never felt before?

I...*ahem* I, uh, I love you. There, I said it.

KEFFIYEH (THE MASS DEBATE)

Hipsters, Arabs, Klansters, Border Patrol Nazis, Africans, South Asians, guess what? It's a fucking scarf. That's all. There's honestly so much debate over the wearing of a scarf that people seem to feel has a built-in terrorist connotation because some of the Billion plus people who have been wearing them for generations have decided to make the wrong decisions in life.

These scarves have always been around and have always been equally entrenched in local fashion as they were in local function and local militancy. While they do, in fact, sometimes make a statement, the vast majority of these scarves are just...scarves. With a pretty cool pattern. And that should be enough. There shouldn't need to be a longstanding debate over what they mean. They MEAN to keep your head, face, and neck covered, like all scarves, whether it be because the sun and sand are out to get you or because that bank really need robbing or because everyone else is doing it. It doesn't matter. Get over it. And don't make arguments without research. If you were to walk into a debate with an argument based on your neighborhood ignorance, you'd deserve whatever loss you got.

NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST

Holy shit. I could be upset because now that this movie has been done, and done so well, I will never be able to write my own midnight music odyssey book. But I also just discovered what true love was. Loving a movie was much simpler in the days of VHS, with the VCR's huge tape slot. You can only imagine what it's like to have your dick smashed in a DVD player while you're trying to show your affection to a movie the only way you know how. Firefighters laugh at me. Paramedics laugh at me. Cops ignore my calls. But I just can't help it. I found my movie soulmate.

Check out (by which I mean BUY) Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist in both book and movie form. And buy the goddamn soundtrack.

THE WEAVE

The students of St. Lawrence University are taking part in an online community/ blog experiment called The Weave. On the site, they cover a number of topics that I assume they also cover in their courses. So far, I've read articles and commentaries on social issues, race, religious conflict (most recently, the actions of Israel in Gaza), and politics. Good stuff. Interesting ponts of view from some of the future leaders of America. Check it out.

KALI MA

Kali Ma is the Hindu deity of death and destruction. These days she's also sometimes associated with change. Coincidentally, she's also the basis for the Marvel Comics character Mystique, who embodies death, destruction, and change (she's a shapeshifter).

AND I'LL FORM...THE HEAD!

There were two Voltrons. One, the Lion Voltron, lives on in our hearts for all eternity as the way that "megazords" should be. The other, Vehicle Voltron, was...well, crap.

This has been the subject of countless debates, arguments, fistfights, and murders. Basically, everything you need to know about a person is tied to Voltron they prefer. It's the original Facebook versus Myspace argument. As insensitive as this sounds, maybe Rodney King was a Vehicle Voltron fan. It would explain a lot.

Where do you fall in?

LOCAL!!!!!

I just got my copy of Local by Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly. I'm a diehard Brian Wood fan, so I'm not going to attempt to butcher a review of this one. Here's the blurb on the back of the book, verbatim:

"From Brian Wood (Demo, DMZ, Northlanders) and Ryan Kelly (Lucifer, American Virgin, The New York Four) comes Local, a collection of twelve interconnected stories, each featuring Megan McKeenan, a young girl who sets out from Portland, Oregon with nothing but a rucksack and a bad case of wanderlust.

These emotional vignettes each represent a year in the life of this young vagabond as she searches for a place to call home, both physically and spiritually. Set in twelve real life cities across North America, this painstakingly researched and meticulously illustrated volume collects forthe first time the critically acclaimed series that writer Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, Runaways, Y: The Las Man) called 'the sharpest slices of life the medium has ever seen.'"

COME ON! Buy a copy at Khepri or Buy a copy at Amazon. Just buy a copy!

THE DAY OF ASHURA

The Islamic holy day of Ashura is a worldwide festival of Shia Muslims acknowledging the day of the death of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. During this festival, Shiites are often know to beat themselves bloody in respect for the wounds inflicted upon the father of their branch of Islam. This practice is considered extremely controversial.

Educate yourself, dammit!

JUDAISM (?)

According to historian Shlomo Zand, the histories of Israel and the Jewish people have both been orchestrated, exaggerate, and manufactured in order to establish the state of Israel. These writings are extremely controversial, and I don't necessarily believe or agree with him, but knowledge is power and it's always fun to learn how and why people think the ways they do.
