CODE GEASS: LELOUCH OF THE REBELLION
Another anime that Cartoon Network's Adult Swim introduced me to, made me fall hard for, sucked me into, then pulled away all too soon. And it was amazing.
The story centers on Lelouch, one of many illegitimate sons of the emperor of a parallel to the British Empire, called Britannia. Brittania is essentially what happens when an empire's natural flaws don't cause it to collapse. Not to say that Brittania is perfect, or even decent, but to say that so far, they haven't been blown away by a larger empire. (There is no other major empire in their reality.)
Years ago, Lelouch's despot father turned his back on Lelouch, his mother (one of MANY royal consorts) and Lelouch's frail and blind sister, Nunally. He attempted to kill them all, and believing he'd succeeded, he went on with his empire's expansion. Years later, as Britannia takes over Japan and dubs it "Area 11", racial and class tensions are at a high and Lelouch sees opportunity to finally destroy Brittania and everything it stands for.
Through some freak accident, Lelouch becomes the wielder of a power called Geass, a form of mind control with origins in the mysterious past of the palnet Earth and, apparently, some other planet.
I'M NOT DOING THIS JUSTICE. JUST CHECK WIKIPEDIA:

It's just all around a very good series, full of real world problems. And giant mechs!
